The First Tow Truck
In 1918, Ernest Holmes filed his patent for the first tow “truck,” which was actually a 1913 Cadillac that he’d fitted with a pulley/crane attachment. This established the tow truck design that would become familiar in the following decades. Holmes’ split-boom configuration was later used by the U.S. military during the second world war. NASCAR also used this style of truck during its races.
Visit the Tow Truck Museum
In Ernest Holmes’ hometown of Chattanooga, TN, you can visit the International Towing Museum. Inside the museum, you’ll find numerous interesting artifacts related to tow trucks and the towing industry. You’ll also find portraits of the members of the International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame.
The Canadians Have Enormous Tow Trucks
If you take a trip up over our northern border, you might find yourself sharing the road with a humongous tow truck. In Canada, there’s a massive trucking industry and brutal winter weather. This has led to the need for the biggest tow trucks in the world. Some of these tow trucks are so big they take up multiple highway lanes.
